The unique design of this magnificent attraction allows the track to wrap around itself through a hilltop tunnel. Perched just under 5 km from the Heart of Darjeeling on Hill Cart Road (NH-55), the Batasia Loop is a harmonious blend of engineering ingenuity, lush hillside greenery and sweeping Himalayan panoramas. Just a short 20-minute drive from the bustle of Darjeeling, the Batasia Loop offers a serene hilltop escape where you’ll watch the iconic toy train spiral gracefully through green gardens, with the Himalayas rising in the background. Commissioned in 1919 to ease the train’s climb, this loop features a beautiful war memorial and breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding peaks — an absolute must-visit whether you’re here for photography, history or just to soak in the mountain air.
The best time to visit the Batasia Loop is early morning between 8 am and 10 am, in the months of March–May (spring) or October–December (autumn to early winter) when skies are clear, the weather is pleasant and you’ll get spectacular views of the hills and mountain peaks.
